Here we are in 2012 and already the dealership is buzzing with news and activity. The Subaru Forester was named Junior Crossover of the year during December 2011. Facing some stiff competition, the symmetrical all-wheel drive and sheer versatility of the Forester made it an easy decision for the judges in the end. The new Subaru XV also caused something of a storm at the recent Frankfurt Motorshow and is set to arrive in the UK sometime in early Spring (we’ll keep you posted).

Subaru BRZ STI

Following months of speculation with only small glimpses and artist impressions, Derek Slack Motors can now reveal Subaru’s RWD (rear wheel drive) BRZ STI.

Subaru’s collaboration with Toyota shares many components with the FT-86, including Toyota’s fuel saving D-4S ‘direct injection system’. However, the chassis and the 2.0 Boxer engine is all Subaru - delivering 250bhp. The BRZ embodies Suabru’s passion for the sports car with a model already booked to appear on the race track in the Japanese Super GT series (GT300 category)
Although the FT-86 and the BRZ models boast very similar profiles, the Subaru BRZ will be more powerfull and sportier with a more recognisable aggressive Subaru bodykit than its Toyota sibling.

Subaru STIMULI Track Day

Derek Slack Motors, main dealers for Subaru in Middlesbrough and North Yorkshire, held their first Subaru STIMULI track day on the 4th November at Teesside Autodrome. The electrifying event organised by Subaru allowed a hand-full of Subaru customers the opportunity to put the Subaru STI through its paces at South Tees Motor Sports Park. The track day consisted of a wide range of activities including, breathtaking manoeuvreability and road handling skills. Subaru’s own team of professional rally drivers offered advice, whilst demonstrating the awe-inspiring ability of the new Cosworth Impreza STI as we accelerated from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds (quicker than most of the world’s supercars), the Cosworth Impreza also pumps out a prodigious 400bhp as we went through a series of tight, hair-pin bends with much screeching, (was that the tyres or me?) all very gripping stuff, (literally).

Customers then strapped themselves behind the wheel of the WRX STI to feel the awesome 300bhp, managing 0-62 in just 5.2 seconds. Even though the rally winning, AWD (All wheel drive) STi boasts some serious power, it still proved what an exceptionally easy car it is to drive and why it’s still miles ahead of any competition.

Before breaking for lunch we enjoyed some less physically challenging driving in the shape of a fun Scalextric competition. I think everyone agreed it was a great event and one that really showed why the Subaru WRX STI is a world beater.

Subaru Appeal For Japan Cycle Relay

Although we cycled our leg of the ‘Subaru Appeal For Japan Cycle Relay’ together, nothing could have prepared us for the appalling weather that awaited during Wednesday 12 October.

It really was terrible, as it had rained heavily the night before and the deluge continued throughout our stage of the cycle relay, with passing cars having to use their lights, in order to be seen. Still, after our 10.00am departure time from Middlesbrough, we travelled the back roads, through Yarm, Hornby, Scorton and Brompton-On-Swale, to our final destination in Richmond, North Yorkshire, approximately thirty miles away.

Even on some of the quieter roads, we encountered heavy traffic, including both lorries and buses. Ian Pattison - Warranty Manager at Derek Slack Skoda, did an excellent job of driving the safety car, by ensuring he was right behind us, not allowing traffic to squeeze between the safety car and bicycles, a move several less-considerate motorists actually attempted.

We made only three brief stops on route for refreshments, which enabled us to maintain a steady pace throughout.
On seeing the final 5-miles road sign for Richmond, we were spurred on to escalate the final lengthy climb uphill. Fortunately, the team at the next Subaru dealership were waiting, just as we arrived on the forecourt.

Despite the soaking conditions, we enjoyed the challenging route, which has gained some local publicity interest already from the local radio station, TFM (thanks folks). Today (13th September) was the world premiere of the new Subaru XV (European specifications) at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

The launch of the XV takes Subaru into the compact crossover segment for the first time, combining style with functionality. Jed Thirkell-Subaru Sales Executive at Derek Slack Motors said, “ In this highly competitive segment, the XV offers something different, bringing a whole new level of engineering excellence.

The XV, has achieved its aim in providing a stylish and distinctive crossover with Subaru driving dynamics, combined with high level of functionality and fuel efficiency.

The XV is a new type of crossover design that combines a stylish, dynamic form with a high body and side cladding to enhance the sense of functionality associated with an SUV.

Equipped with a hexagonal grille and hawk eye headlights, these design features emphasize the unique identity of the newest Subaru cars, while the striking and innovatively designed alloy wheels and cut-away cladding give the XV its sporting appearance.

The corners of the front and rear bumpers were designed with special edges that enhance the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle and also contribute to better fuel efficiency.

The new, 3rd generation Subaru Boxer engine, introduced this year with a totally new design, is installed in 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol models. The event now in its second year, included an extreme off road course designed to test the abilities of the Isuzu Rodeo. Teams took part in two events before lunch which included, clay pigeon shooting, segway (those funny two wheel self-balancing electric vehicles), archery and falconry displays. I was fortunate to visit the Geneva Motorshow back in February 2011 and had my first glimpse of the new Impreza concept model which looks set to become the new Impreza 2012. Subaru has a new brand statement-‘confidence in motion’, coupled with the brand’s core value of ‘enjoyment and peace of mind’.
The new sleek styling looks more in line with the STI, with the roofline creating a silky profile while the slender headlights and slightly exaggerated grille give off real attitude. If these proportions are retained for the 2012 model, then we’re in for a real treat. Word is that Subaru are also looking for economy improvements with estimates amounting to substantial gains over the old model. I’ll keep you posted. All-in-all it was another great show. I’ve attached a few images with a sneak preview of the Impreza 2012. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Skoda Vision D

During our recent visit to the 81st Geneva Motorshow, Skoda unveiled the new Vision D concept vehicle, which marks another big step into the future for Skoda. The Vision D certainly stimulated the imagination of visitors providing a view to Skoda’s future. Cheif designer Josek Kaban talked about a love of simplicity and the style is very clean and easy on the eye.
We’re told the next Octavia may also adopt some of the Vision D’s design cues. ‘We want practical and beautiful’, said Kaban. ‘We want everything – with cars people think you have to go left or right. We want both.’  
As number 1 Skoda dealer in the UK, Derek Slack Motors will spearhead the launch of a new product offensive commencing in 2012, with new models every six months as the new design language is ushered in. We can expect clean simplicity from them all. Kaban: ‘Lots of cars are like Christmas trees with all their design. I like Christmas, but only once a year!’  Skoda’s freshen up is also signaled by a new logo, though it’s an evolution of the old badge rather than revolution. While it’s green in print, it will be silver and black in the flesh, giving a classier look.

Phew!, March 1st proved to be just as busy as we expected. Great to meet so many new customers along with many familiar faces too. The new 11 registration proved successful for Skoda, Subaru and Isuzu. New models such as Subaru’s WRX STi have attracted a great deal of attention. The frozen VAT offer and Free Subaru accessory pack also proved popular, as did the VAT free offer on selected Skodas, in particular the £99 per month offer on brand new Skoda Fabia 1.2 S. We’ve also helped put Teesside back on the map following our recent award as the number one Skoda dealer in the UK for customer satisfaction. As one of the few family-run motor retailers, it’s great to see the public voting for an independent dealer who put their customers first rather than their share holders!

We know you’re busy preparing for Christmas but we thought you might be interested in some very special offers available on new Škoda cars ordered this month for 2011 delivery. All new Škodas will go up by approximately 3% on the first of January (as they do each year) on top of that the VAT will also increase by 2.5%. Škoda however will honour this year’s price plus, to frustrate the Chancellor, we’ll also price protect the 2.5% VAT increase on Yeti and Superb models. You may have read in the press recently that some makes of new cars are in short supply. This is certainly the case for Škoda whose vehicles seem to get better and better and continue to appeal to an even larger market each year.

We (and all other Škoda dealers) are currently suffering from very low new car stocks, which doesn’t look to improve any time soon (orders ranging from 9 to 30 weeks delivery!). So, if you are planning on a new Škoda next year why not order it before the end of December, all we need is an hour or so of your time and a small deposit. Yesterday 20 December was the start of Derek Slack Motors new ITV campaign, featuring the benefits of driving a Subaru with their permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. However, on a more serious note, a new pattern seems to be emerging with UK winters steadily worsening. Roads, rail services and airports, are all too easily becoming scuppered by very low temperatures and snow. So it’s no surprise more people are now looking to 4 wheel drive vehicles as their preferred method of transport. It’s also important to remember not all 4x4 are the same!

With the engine weight over the nose, front-drive cars have a slightly better chance of making headway in bad weather, while rear-drivers can all but forget hopes of gaining grip. There are no such issues with Subaru’s All-Wheel Drive.

We’ve been waxing lyrical about the benefits of Subaru’s unique permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive for some time now, even more so since our autumn turned suddenly wintery!

So, we thought it high time we transcended from traditional media platforms and spread our wings into the world of TV with a spanking new Subaru commercial. The campaign gets underway from Monday the 20th December ending 2nd January 2011.

It’s the first time Derek Slack Motors have advertised on TV, and although we’ve dabbled in radio and have a strong presence in the local press, TV is new for us and very exciting.

However, it’s not the only new area of publicity activity. 2010 also saw us embrace social media, so you can now find us tweeting on Twitter and enjoying some general chit-chat with our Facebook friends.

Special Edition Fabia vRS S2000 comes to North East

Skoda has unveiled a stunning Special Edition Fabia vRS S2000 to mark the company’s success in this year’s intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). Fitted with a 1.4 TSi 180bhp turbo charged and super charged engine, the car has a top speed of 139mph and accelerates from 0-62mph in just 7.3 secfonds. The engine is mated to a seven-speed, twin-clutch DSG that can operate in two modes-fully automated and manual Tiptronic.

The car will be availble in Rallye Green with a white roof, white 17” Gigaro alloy wheels and race livery similar to the IRC championship winning Fabia S2000.

Think Subaru this winter

We are often lulled into a sense of false security by typical British weather. We expect it to be chilly and probably wet but snow... well, that’s something else altogether. While the rail services may be scuppered by the wrong leaves on the tracks, we are often slowed down by the wrong type of snow.

Of course, it is understandable. We are an island state. Our predominantly maritime climate means that we have to deal with very slippery slush, unlike the Scandinavians, who can compact and grade the snow to still drive on it.

Just when I was getting used to the idea of autumn, suddenly winter arrived, with snow forecast on higher ground.

So I thought it might be a good idea to remind those who do more than their fare share of winter driving the benefits of AWD (all wheel drive) in particular the Subaru Forester.

Winter motoring can be difficult at the best of times, non more so than here in the North East, with many areas in North Yorkshire, the Durham Dales,Teesside and County Durham a challenge for any vehicle. We all remember too well the severity of our last long, hard winter which caused huge amounts of disruption.

Isuzu Rodeo in North Yorkshire

We recently enjoyed a great day out in the company of Isuzu at their Rodeoactive Ride and Drive Day on the 29th October. Jed Thirkle and YT along with 8 others guests were put through their paces which included, clay pigeon shooting, archery, falconry plus the opportunity to drive the fantastic Rodeo on the special off-road driving course. Under some expert tuition it was incredible to witness just how capable the Isuzu Rodeo is when challenging North Yorkshire mud... effortlessly overcoming every obstacle thrown in its path, including steep slippery slopes, equally steep decents, deep water, boulders and just about anything else.

The event held at Duncombe Park, Helmsley, York, North Yorkshire was one of the first of it’s kind with over 80 people in attendance. It was good to meet so many new Isuzu owners along with a few familiar faces too!

Wilks aims for triple Škoda celebration in Scotland

Guy Wilks is aiming to give Škoda three reasons to be very cheerful on this year’s RACMSA Rally of Scotland (15-17 October). Superb wins Towcar of the Year title

Derek Slack Motors, main dealers for Skoda in the North East are delighted to announce the Škoda Superb Estate is the Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year 2011.

The Elegance 2.0 TDI CR model took top honor in its price category and went on to be voted overall winner of the competition. The Skoda Fabia also won the top award in the under £16,000 category.

A panel of 10 judges praised the Superb for its great performance when towing in a variety of situations and for its practicality as a caravanning family car.

After accepting the honor last night at the Royal Automobile Club in London, Škoda UK’s Head of Aftersales John Bower said: “Since it launched earlier this year, the Škoda Superb Estate has proven to be an extremely popular choice for drivers looking for luxury and style combined with practicality and spaciousness.

“Caravanners tend to make very educated and informed purchases and have extremely high standards when it comes to their cars, so receiving an award from the caravan industry experts is not only an excellent achievement but a real testament to the quality of the model.”

This is the third time the Škoda Superb has been named Towcar of the Year, with the first-generation saloon winning in 2003 and the new-generation twin-door model taking the top honour in 2009.

Recent changes to Skoda’s eco-friendly diesel version of the Superb hatchback and estate models are now offering huge benefits to motorists in the north east looking for better economy without compromising power.

WhatCar? magazine described the Skoda Superb as ‘an executive car at a family price’,
and we at Derek Slack Motors couldn’t agree more! The huge cavernous hatchback and estate models both receive smaller diesel engines that achieve more than the engine they replace. Stunning economy figures improve from 49.6mpg to an incredible 57mpg whilst emissions fall from 150g/km to just 130g/km.

Despite the the size of the engine decreasing from 1.9 litres to 1.6 litres, power and output remain the same at 105bhp and both the acceleration and top speed are unchanged at 12.5 seconds and 118mph.

Extra savings also come to private users following improvements in economy, with an additional 70 miles from every ten-gallon fill up. For company car drivers, the tax liability reduces because of the sheer desirability of this model on the second hand market, with residual values likely to be sky-high, meaning lower finance to fund the purchase or the lease. That’s great news for company car users in Teesside, North Yorkshire and County Durham.

If only every company car could achieve the same level of C02 reductions and improved economy it would be the equivalent of taking millions of vehicles off the road.

Skoda Superb drivers will already be familiar with the executive-style build quality that is a match for any of its German rivals, the VW based Superb is one of the most spacious family sized models on the market. It also features a unique boot lid called Twindoor, allowing the vehicle to become either a saloon or hatchback, depending on witch catch is pressed, with 430 litres of luggage space beneath.

Skoda win ‘Best Car Manufacturer’ title in the annual Which? Awards

The awards really seem to be following us around these days! Not content with

being nominated as one of the top 50 dealers in the UK and in the top 5 in the region, now Skoda have received their own prestigious award from Which ?

as ‘Best Car Manufacturer’ title in the annual Which? Awards, presented at the British Museum on the 19 May. Škoda trumped the competition – including premium brands – thanks to their outstanding customer service and products.

Škoda UK Director, Robert Hazelwood, said: “We’re really pleased to win this award. It shows just how highly Which? rates our products and service. We’re very proud of the excellent engineering and great value in every one of our cars, and pleased that Which? has recognised the outstanding personal service our retailers give their customers.”

The Which? car test team and Which? members were impressed with Škoda’s reliability, customer care and the quality of its retailers. Škoda achieved above-average marks for its retailers (79 per cent) and its service (81 per cent), and the brand had a reliability score of 79 per cent. Four Škoda models were judged to be ‘Best Buys’ or ‘Worth Considering’.

Which? Chief Executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, said: “Škoda is a car company ideally suited to the times, as people demand more but want to pay less. It offers a great range of reasonably-priced, well-built cars.”

Announcing the awards, he added: “The winner of this award is a car brand much praised by its customers, with high scores on dealer satisfaction for both sales and servicing. Owner satisfaction is also high, with most Which? members rating it as very good. The company also achieved a number of best buys for the various models we tested, making Škoda an obvious choice for Best Car Manufacturer 2010.”

Editor of Which? Car, Richard Headland added: “'People might know Škoda as a purveyor of value, but what they might not know is that this brand should be equally recognised for its quality of product, its reliability and its excellent retailer network.”

Skoda Fabia vRS comes to Middlesbrough, Darlington and Stockton on Tees

Podium hat-trick for Wilks as Skoda repeats 123

Guy Wilks and co-driver Phil Pugh scored a sensational third consecutive podium finish in the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge after coming home third on the Rally Islas Canarias 'Trofeo El Corte Ingles', which finished in Las Palmas today.

Guy was driving the same Škoda UK Motorsport Fabia S2000 in which he’d finished second on Rally Brazil and Rally Argentina. Having been shipped to Gran Canarias directly from South America, only a limited amount of time was available to change the car from gravel to asphalt specification – performed by the team’s skilled mechanics in the service bays of a Škoda retailer in Las Palmas.

On his first full asphalt rally in the Fabia S2000, the 29-year old Darlington driver set top-five stage times throughout the high-speed, two-day, 15-special stage event to stay second in the drivers’ standings.

It was also another fantastic event for Škoda, which scored its second consecutive one-two-three IRC finish. Having achieved its first international rally podium lock-out on Rally Argentina, the Czech brand did it again in Gran Canarias. This time, the three top Fabia S2000 drivers came home in a different order, with Jan Kopecký finishing 9.1 seconds ahead of Škoda Motorsport team-mate Juho Hänninen, and Guy a further 27.3 seconds behind. The result extends Škoda’s lead in the IRC manufacturers’ table to 31 points.

Third was just reward for a fantastic Škoda UK Motorsport effort, as the team had to overcome the disadvantage of not being able to test on the Spanish holiday island before the event began. The stages presented a great challenge, as the wide, twisty mountain roads were incredibly fast – with several tests completed at an average speed of around 60mph.

Car set-up was vital to give the Fabia S2000 the necessary high-speed grip levels required on the many long corners and to help preserve tyres. Although Guy experimented with different suspension settings throughout the event, he drove a faultless rally – pushing hard when the car was at its best on day two and driving intelligently when the mechanical grip was not so good in the middle section of day one.

Having completed day one in third place, Guy kept the pressure on Kopecký and Hänninen by pushing hard over the final day’s six stages. Guy made sure he was best-placed to benefit from any potential mishaps ahead, and despite a furious pace until the very end, the three Škoda drivers reached the finish in Las Palmas in the same 1-2-3 order they’d started the final day.

Guy said: “Three IRC podiums in a row for Škoda UK Motorsport and the second consecutive all-Škoda podium is a great achievement, and we are all very happy.

“It hasn’t been an easy event for us. We lost a chunk of time on day one trying things out on the car and we were a lot closer to the pace on day two. With Jan and Juho ahead, and only an all-Škoda podium to lose, there wasn’t a good enough reason to throw caution to the wind and really push on the final day, but we were happy to finish at the pace we did.

“It’s been a hectic start to the season, with this rally added to the schedule and the rally car coming straight here from South America. Preparation time has been limited, so we couldn’t test in Gran Canaria before the event. Sometimes you have to dig really deep, work hard and fight for every second – and this has been one of those rallies.

“We’ve got a little bit of a breather now before our next rally in Sardinia, so we aim to make the most of that time to prepare well for the next round of the IRC. I know that I and the Fabia can gel a little bit better and better results can come. I know we can push for the rally win, absolutely, and that’s what we’re aiming for.”

The next round of the IRC is the Rally d'Italia Sardegna (4-6 June).

Watching spring turn slowly into summer, I’m always reminded how quickly the year can

Tony, our dealer principle has asked me to remind customers about the benefits of checking their air conditioning system. I'm a bit new to this blogging, but here goes...

Here's how Derek Slack Motors can help clean up your car air conditioning before hot weather hits.

Bacteria in air conditioning systems can cause unpleasant smells and allergies which can become a real problem.

A Bi-annual check should prevent expensive breakdowns and enhance performance.

It’s unlikely that many drivers will have thought about their car’s air conditioning over the past few months. As spring brings the warmer weather we at Derek Slack Motors recommend an air conditioning clean-up to prevent the system from harboring microbiological growths that can cause unpleasant odours.

During the life of a car, micro-organisms can get trapped in the evaporator fins of a vehicle’s air conditioning unit. Left to their own devices these can breed and will often cause a very nasty smell and, in some cases, an allergic reaction.

Although some high street stores sell deodorising products, most simply mask the smell and don’t tackle the root cause of the problem. At Derek Slack Motors, however, our expert aftersales team lead by me Craig Parry, is offering customers a treatment that eradicates the micro-organisms as well as the unpleasant odour. Yippie!

In addition to the clean-up treatment, Derek Slack Motors also recommend that drivers have their vehicle’s air conditioning serviced every two years to ensure the system is operating at optimum performance. Cosworth Impreza coming to Teesside

Derek Slack Motors, main Subaru dealers for Teesside, based in Middlesbrough, are now taking orders for the new supercar, the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400. Boasting nearly 400bhp, this much anticipated automotive collaboration, will roar into our showroom sometime in June.

We’ve just enjoyed a cracking easter here at Derek Slack Motors. It’s proved once again, customers on Teesside don’t just associate us with Skoda, Subaru and Isuzu, but they’re also aware we stock one of the widest selection of quality used vehicles on Teesside too!

There was all manner of customers that weekend. People searching for their first ever runaround, returning customers looking for a used, Skoda, Ford, Renault, Seat, Fiat, VW, Vauxhall, you name it! One thing that did stand out was the number of people still interested in Scrappage!

Our new £149 per month deal with No Deposit on a brand new Skoda proved really popular. We’ve only recently advertised it in the press, so I imagine a lot of customers must have seen the link on our website, and realising just what a great offer it is! For example, you can now save £2,000 on a new Skoda Roomster or Fabia, plus £2,500 on the new Skoda Yeti and Superb! All available on vehicles registered before March 2003.

That weekend alone, we had customers looking for a used car from, Thornaby, Stockton, Billingham, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Saltburn, Yarm and Darlington. So it goes without saying, we must still be number one on Teesside for used cars!

Skoda wins out over Citroen on Teesside

On a very wet day in March, it was cheering to see smiling ‘Happy” customers taking delivery of their new Skodas from Derek Slack Motors on Teesside.

When Mr. and Mrs. Britton from Marske, where handed the keys to their sparkling new Skoda Fabia 2 1.2 Estate by Ged Thirkell, the rain seemed the last thing on their minds as they were taken through the pleasures of the nimble Fabia - a car that delivers so much without the need to break the bank!

Mr. and Mrs. Britton have been Derek Slack customers for several years,

and we really appreciate their custom in returning to us!

So we were delighted when they decided to buy their second Skoda Fabia from Derek Slack Motors, trading in their old Skoda Fabia for a new estate model. Mr. Britton explained why he’d decided to choose Derek Slack Motors. “I used to drive past the garage everyday but had always been a loyal Citroen driver. However, after becoming increasingly dissatisfied by the lack customer focus by my local garage (who were swallowed up by a much larger plc), my wife and I decided to look elsewhere. Derek Slack Motors are a family run company, and have proven to be a worthy choice. In fact I remember having my last car serviced, and when requiring a lift back into work, I was cheered no end to find that my driver was in fact Derek Slack himself! If that doesn’t speak volumes for customer care then what does”.

Middlesbrough Golf Club’s-'Derek Slack Motors Trophy’

Middlesbrough Golf Club’s annual ‘Alliance Golf Tournament’ recently took place with Derek Slack Motors once again delighted to offer their support as main sponsors.

Golfers from throughout the North East and North Yorkshire turned up to what has become a regional showcase event, as each competed for the coverted title ‘Derek Slack Motors Trophy’ winner! The 2010 tournament attracted over 180 very good golfers, with PGA professional Gordon Cattrell amongst them.

Derek Slack gave Gordon a pretty good game putting up a tough challenge, but the pro’s skills were always going to prove too much, with Derek finally beaten on the day. Next year Gordon!

Derek Slack Motors had several vehicles on display throughout the event, attracting a great deal of positive feedback from the participants. It was a great day and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Happy Darlington Couple head for Subaru on Teesside

Tuesday 30th March was a cold, foggy day here on Teesside, and even though the clouds didn’t break, a ray of sunshine did manage to appear on our forecourt when a delighted Mrs. Scott from Darlington, took delivery of her stunning new Subaru Forester XS Automatic. This was Lynne Scott’s second Subaru and she was over the moon when Sales Executive - Ged Thirkell handed over the keys! There was no question in Lynne’s mind which vehicle was going to replace her old Subarau Forester and that was a new Subrau Forester. So after doing her homework, Lynne decided Derek Slack Motors, (main dealers for Subaru on Teesside), was the right choice. We’re delighted Mr. and Mrs. Smith choose Derek Slack Motors for their new Subaru, as we wish them both many years of safe, happy motoring! What lovely people!

Guy Wilks Celebrates!

As many of you already know, we’re keen followers of Guy Wilks - Skoda UK’s rally driver who recently helped Derek Slack Motors official launch of the new Skoda Superb Estate at our Middlesbrough dealership. It’s great to see Guy and co-driver Phil Pugh doing so well, finishing a close second in ‘Rally Argentina’ with Skoda celebrating a sensational 1-2-3 finish.

Skoda’s 1-2-3 finish on one of the world’s toughest rally circuits, is the first time a single manufacturer has taken all three honers since Lancia way back in 1989.

Having also taken second place in Brazil two weeks ago, Guy was over the moon to have scored 16 points on the IRC’as South American doubler-header! He said, “We’ve had two fantastic rallies in South America and the Skoda UK Motorsport team has done a fantastic job.”

We’ll be following Guy Wilks in the next event and keep you posted on results!

Isuzu has the farm factor in North Yorkshire

Many of our Isuzu customers will be interested to read that 10 UK Farmers were recently invited to go head-to-head in tasks that tested their practical skills on the farm as well as their knowledge of the industry. Each week one of the competitors was sent home, with only one man left standing. The prize was an Isuzu, which was featured throughout the series featured on TV.

The winner was not only delighted with winning the competition, but he’s also a big fan of his new Isuzu: “We now prefer driving the Rodeo to our traditional family car,” said Aled Rees - the lucky winner. “It’s a fantastic vehicle that’s a real asset around the farm. They gave us a demonstration of its off-roading ability during the filming of the series and we were all really impressed.”

Derek Slack Motors are all too familiar with the on - and - off road capabilities of the Rodeo. Many of our Isuzu customers also live in rural locations including North Yorkshire, the North York Moors, Whitby, Stokesley, Helmsley, Northallerton, plus, County Durham and Darlington. It’s not only rugged enough to deal with the rough-and-tumble nature of farming life, but it’s also proved to be the perfect solution for business users, including Mr. Russell of C. W. Russell Ltd of Middlesbrough who took delivery of his new Isuzu Denver Max LE from Derek Slack Motors on March 16th.

Derek Slack Motors Prize Winners

Mr. P. Jackson of Stokesley North Yorkshire, was the lucky winner of a fabulous flat screen TV at the recent Derek Slack Motors Open Evening on 24th February 2010. Mr Jackson, the proud owner of a fabulous Octavia Scout was delighted with his prize which was drawn on the evening by Skoda’s very own UK Rally driver, Guy Wilks from County Durham. Other winners on the evening included, Mr. A. Findlay of Eston and Mr. G. Short of Stockton on Tees, both winners of Skoda & Isuzu jackets. It was a great night and I’m so pleased everyone who attended enjoyed themselves. We’ve now firmly established ourselves in the region as the number one dealer for Skoda, Subaru and Isuzu on Teesside, plus the message seems to be spreading far and wide as we see customers traveling from even further afield. It all goes to prove that if you look after your customers they’ll come back and not only that, they’ll tell their friends too!

We’ve enjoyed lots of positive feedback from the event and are already in the process of planning a similar open night in the not too distant future.

Derek Slack Motors named 2nd in North East in Motor Codes Golden Garage competition.

We’re proud to announce, Derek Slack Motors in Middlesbrough, main dealers for Skoda, Subaru and Isuzu, have been voted 2nd in the North East in the ‘Motor Codes’ Golden Garage’ competition. The top five garages in the North East will now progress to the final stages of the national competition, designed to find the UK’s best workshop!

It’s testimony to the high levels of customer satisfaction we achieve here at Prospect Place, A66 Cargo Fleet in Middlesbrough. Coming second shows how much customers appreciate our efforts, so this is some reward and the entire after sales team led by Craig Parry are over the moon!

The full list of garages can be viewed online where members of the public can continue to vote in the final public voting stage, deciding on the top garage per region. So if you haven’t already done so and you’re one of our many satisfied customers reading this blog, please offer your support. We’re aiming for top spot, second isn’t good enough!

It’s sad to read research by Motor Codes found over 14 million motorist feel short changed by their local service and repair garage, however, over 90% using a Motor Codes garage were satisfied.

Motor Codes operates a self regulatory code of practice for garages across the country with the aim of giving motorists consistently high standards of service.

The Golden Garage competition is intended to champion garages, also raising the profile of Motor Codes in Britain to get more garages on its books and more consumers to use its website. STELLA EV Plug-In

Continuing the ‘green’ theme, from the Geneva Motor Show, Derek and I were impressed with the new Subaru Plug-in STELLA EV. The progress of green car technology is something we’re really behind at Derek Slack Motors and the lithium-ion battery-powered, 90km-per-charge, 40kW, electric vehicle is paving the way!

It can be recharged up to 80 per cent of its capacity in about 15 minutes when using its quick charging system. Under normal circumstances the city car is fully rechargeable in five hours when using an AC240V power outlet. I’m confident the day isn’t too far away when motorists of Middlesbrough and the North East, will be driving to work in electrically powered vehicles such as the STELLA AV!

Subaru Boxer Hybrid Tourer Concept car

It’s been a few days since Derek and I returned from the 80th Geneva Motor Show which featured the world’s first ‘Boxer’-hybrid powerplant and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Hybrid Tourer Concept car, making its European debut at the show. The show car marries Subaru’s design DNA with an opulent and spacious cabin accessed through elongated gullwing-style doors, and an eye-catching, sculpted body. It will be exciting day when our Middlesbrough dealership sees the arrival of this vehicle!

The absence of B-pillars affords a heightened sense of light and space to the interior, providing occupants with a less obstructed view of the outside world- all very clever stuff! The swept-back panoramic windscreen and a height-adjustable dashboard afford the driver a similarly unhindered vantage point. I was definately impressed, the attached picture shows the Concept car in all its glory!

The innovative hybrid system uses Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a 2.0-litre horizontally-opposed, direct-injection, turbocharged petrol ‘Boxer’ engine, allied to two electric motors – Subaru remains the only company to mate this engine layout to a hybrid drivetrain. The electric motors are powered by lithium-ion batteries – a 10kW item at the front and a 20kW unit at the rear.

In normal driving conditions the direct-injection petrol engine is used, but at lower speeds and start-up, the rear electric motor drives the car. The forward electric unit, which is mainly used as a power generator, kicks in to assist performance and efficiency while tackling inclines. Subaru’s in-house designed Lineartronic automatic transmission is featured, further boosting fuel efficiency and driving performance. In short breathtaking performance with beautiful styling! I’m just looking forward to getting behind the wheel!

80th international Geneva Motor Show

On the 8th March, Derek and myself visited the 80th International Geneva Motor Show, where over 150 world premieres took place, including the Subaru Hybrid Tourer concept car, the Stella Plug-in, plus, some new faces from Skoda including the Roomster Magic, Roomster Scout. In addition, the Fabia Combi, Fabia Ambiente, Fabia Elegance, Fabia Combi RS and Fabia RS.

The halls of Palexpo was the venue for this the 80th Geneva International Motor Show and there was plenty to keep us drooling, with numerous green car additions.

To qualify as a ‘world premiere’ the product must be an entirely new model. Furthermore, it must not have been presented to the public before or be on sale in the world, (even though Derek Slack Motors as official main dealers for Skoda, Surbaru and Isuzu on Teesside had snippets of inside information on some of our franchise premieres).

The great strengths of the Geneva Show have always been neutrality, representativeness and annuality. This explains the quantity and quality of the worldwide premieres that are presented each year by the greatest manufacturers.

A large number of new models, prototypes, and concept cars presented at the motor show showed the trend towards a future of more ecological and economical automobiles, which we at Derek Slack Motors fully endorse! Specialists and luxury marques, have always been a special attraction of the show, and this was to be no exception, with a number of streamlined concept cars. All in all it was another great show and one we hope to visit again. We look forward in seeing some of these new models arrive in our showroom in the very near future.

Open Night

We recenlty held one of our most exciting motor events marking the launch of Skoda’s exciting new Superb Estate with a VIP open night, that saw the dealership jam packed with both Skoda, Subaru and Isuzu customers! Established back in 1973, we were known as the region’s largest Skoda dealer. Even though tough times fell upon the industry during the credit crunch, we were busy expanding, adding Subaru and Isuzu into the fold, so the open night was an ideal opportunity to mark the opening of the new showroom. The event got underway with County Durham born rally driver Guy Wilks - Skoda UK Motorsport’s new exciting rally prospect, opening the proceedings speaking to customers about Skoda’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

It was a terrific evening,we met lots of new faces, along with many familiar ones too! Many people came to see the new Skoda Superb Estate, but we also featured many new exciting models for the event including, the new Subaru Impreza TDi, the new Legacy and Outback, plus the popular Skoda Yeti and Octavia VRS.’

It was also great having Guy Wilks here representing Skoda UK’s Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Guy really is an exciting prospect for Skoda motorsport and you can be sure that Derek Slack Motors will be supporting him all the way!

Subaru UK also did their bit, to support the evenings entertainment with the delivery of a fully deckled Subaru Impreza police vehicle. Music was provided by local live Jazz act, ‘After Eight Jazz’.The evening climaxed with some exciting prizes and giveaways, drawn by Guy Wilks. ‘We are all really pleased with the huge turn out for the event. The weather forecast was poor with snow falling earlier during the day, but it didn’t deter our loyal customers, and we’re already busy planning out next event.
